If you’re the kind of man who reads articles like this one, looking for the thing that finally makes everything click... I want to name something. That instinct, while well intentioned, might be part of what’s keeping you stuck.
We live in the age of information. There’s no shortage of it. Men are continuously taking in knowledge and mistaking it for growth.
Here’s what makes this so easy to miss. It feels like work. It feels virtuous, even productive. Reading the book, listening to the podcast, watching the video about presence or emotional capacity... none of which requires anything of your nervous system. It requires nothing of your body. It’s mental activity, not lived experience. And because it feels like effort, it’s mistaken for embodiment.
‘Men are not under-informed.
They are over-informed and under-embodied.’
Awareness is knowing something is happening.
Capacity is being able to do something about it while it’s happening.
Information can give you the first. Only practice gives you the second.
There’s an old saying.
The most difficult journey we can embark on is the 17 inches from the head to the heart.
The hardest journey a man will ever make.
Consuming more information won’t get you there.
‘A man can know exactly what presence looks like and still lack the capacity to access it when his partner needs it most.’
Think about it like training. If you’re not putting in the reps, actually challenging the body, meeting resistance, recovering, then there’s no growth. You can read every book on strength training in existence and still be weak the moment you’re asked to lift something heavy.
The nervous system works the same way. Capacity for presence isn’t built by understanding presence. It’s built by meeting real resistance, physiological or psychological, and as a teacher of mine often says, “holding the tension,” rather than ejecting.
One lives in your head… thinking about the past or worrying about the future. The other lives in your body and resides in the now moment. That same capacity, to slow down, to stay, to feel rather than eject, is the capacity required to be present with the people he loves and serves.
This is the part most men miss. Consuming more information without building that capacity doesn’t just fail to help. It takes up the exact space where practice could be happening. The baseline doesn’t move, because the thing he’s doing instead of training is the thing he believes counts as training.
Imagine your partner sharing something important and all she can feel is your analysis.
Imagine your child reaching for your attention while your mind is still somewhere else.
Imagine being physically present for the most meaningful moments of your life while emotionally absent from them.
This isn’t hypothetical… this is the reality of many high-perfoming men.
On the relational side, my capacity has been expanded by my willingness to be in intimate relationships that challenged me, that confronted me, that asked more of me than I knew how to give at the time. These have been significant initiations. Testing my ability to remain open and heart centered even when every part of me wanted to eject.
In truth, my closest relationships have been the greatest catalyst in my healing and awakening journey. I believe relationships are the most challenging and accelerated spiritual path, because of intimacy. Into-me-I-see.
This isn’t about never getting pulled out of your body. Even a trained nervous system still gets pulled out sometimes. It’s about how fast you can find your way back, and whether you have the capacity to even notice you’ve left.
A month ago, for the first time since Sasha and I have been together, I found myself stuck in my head while we were making love. I’d been putting in a lot of hours with work. There was an offer on the table with a potential client, and I couldn’t detach from it.
Sasha felt it immediately. Not because I said anything. My body told her before I did.
A man who hasn’t trained this capacity wouldn’t have caught it. He’d have finished, gotten up, and never known anything was missing. His partner would have felt it without either of them ever naming it. That’s the gap most couples are living in, quietly, for years.
That’s the difference training makes. Not perfection. Capacity to notice, and capacity to come back.
How you do one thing is how you do everything.
How you breathe is how you live.
The same can be said about sex.
‘How you make love is how you live.’
How’s that landing for you?
This isn’t about a man being broken or needing to be fixed. It’s about understanding how his nervous system works. How humans are wired. Certain programs came into place early in development and have stayed in the body.
The more issues in the tissues, the more stored tension.
Animals naturally discharge stress when danger passes. Humans often don’t. Instead, we carry the charge into our work, relationships, and daily lives, reducing our capacity to feel and connect.
The less capacity to feel, the less capacity for connection. And the less capacity for connection, the more we live in performance rather than presence. Performance is essentially competition, and at its root is the masculine doing, not in harmony with the feminine being... the feeling, the rest, the connection. A lot of men use work as a way to not feel. It can be a distraction or way to avoid what’s happening within or at home.
What is it costing a man to keep trying to figure this out alone?
The cost of disconnection is rarely paid at work. It’s paid in the places that matter most.
His partner or intimate relationships can’t feel him. That’s the cost. Not someday. Now.
Perhaps you have read all of my articles here on Substack. Maybe you’ve felt something shift each time. But if the only thing that’s changed is what you know, not what you do, not who’s in the room with you, then this is happening again, right now.
A man cannot do this alone. We’re not meant to do this work alone. Alone = failure. Men need other men. A mentor, a guide, someone who can see what he can’t see in himself.
You are reading about presence instead of practicing it.
Learning about embodiment instead of embodying.
Standing at the edge of the pool instead of getting in the water.
When men come together in a container where they truly feel safe to relax, that’s when healing naturally happens. Most men have spent their lives learning how to perform under pressure. Very few have learned how to relax into connection. When they drop their guard, drop the armor, their nervous system is able to unwind and release what it no longer wants to carry.
What is the private in-person immersion, and who is it actually for?
Immersions are for high performing men who are tired of trying to outperform their disconnection. Tired of not being able to be fully present with their partners because they don’t know how to shut off their mind. They’re exposed to so much information without having the discipline to actually integrate and embody it.
A big part of what we do is create a space where men can release and liberate stuck energy, which naturally increases their capacity for connection, their capacity to feel, to be present with their partners, and to continue expanding their emotional capacity, presence, and depth. This is where I utilize my own methodology of bodywork. Men have the opportunity to simply breathe and receive as we liberate these stuck tensions from the body. A dear brother who has experienced this work with me describes it well in his own Substack publication.
This is not more information.
It is an experience.
It is practice.
This is a high value offering. It’s not for everyone. And it’s something a man will never receive from content alone. He can only receive it when he’s truly held by someone who has met themselves at a deeper level, and therefore can hold that compassionate, non-judgmental space for him to feel safe to relax and be in-body.
Over the course of the immersion, a man is given the opportunity to slow down, reconnect with his body, meet the places he’s been avoiding, and practice a different way of being in real time.
It’s a good place to start, especially for a man who’s been in that world his whole life, who senses he’s being called to change but isn’t sure how. He wants an experience. He wants to be held in that process, and to properly integrate it.
That’s where I do a week of preparation, meet them in person for the immersion, and offer four weeks of integration support after, where they have direct access to me. I make sure they’re able to bring everything they’ve learned back into their life, not just integrate back into old patterns… continue being the next version of themselves. Resensitizing their body, expanding their awareness, and enjoying greater levels of love, pleasure, peace, coherence, and connection.
If you’re not sure the immersion is the right first step, there’s another way in. I am now offering private 1:1 consultations. A single, focused session where we go directly into what’s actually keeping you stuck. It’s not a sales call. It’s the work, just contained to a single session.
If that’s the door that makes sense for you right now, reach out.
Peace & love,
Jonathan
