Most men have been given one half of the equation. Either the hard masculine… the provider, the protector, the performer… or the soft masculine… the sensitive, the vulnerable, the emotionally available. Both are incomplete on their own.
I grew up surrounded by the hard masculine. My parents were military. My stepdad, the man who raised me, was a special forces soldier. And yet I really did feel his love. He just wasn’t sensitive. He wasn’t vulnerable. I never really saw him express sadness or anger or any real depth for that matter. And then my biological dad was a softer man, more sensitive in some ways, but also completely shut off from his emotions. I’ve never seen him cry. I’ve haven’t really witnessed him express hurt or significant levels of joy. When I think about the masculine I was handed, I really had to find my own way.
Then I moved to Costa Rica. And I saw the other extreme. Men who were overly feminized, almost completely rejecting the masculine. Very passive. Expressive and in flow, but completely ungrounded with no real clear direction or purpose.
I’ve lived inside both extremes. The hyper hard masculine… mixed martial arts, military culture, oil rigs, truck driver, Afghanistan as a civilian contractor, construction. And the soft masculine… dancing, ceremony, healing, nature, deep internal work on the South Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
And I can tell you from lived experience… neither is the answer.
The high-performing man has typically mastered the leader half. He knows how to produce, decide, protect, provide. What he hasn’t been shown is how to love. Not sentimentally. Somatically. Fully. With his whole body present.
The lover half without the leader is a man who feels everything, but can hold nothing. He doesn’t have boundaries. He doesn’t know how to contain himself, and therefore he doesn’t know how to contain the feminine.
The leader half without the lover is a man who holds everything, but feels nothing. He can create containment for the feminine, but is unable to really feel her and meet her at the depth she’s asking for.
Neither of these is the man his partner is asking for. Neither is the man his children need. Neither is the man he actually wants to be because on some level, he feels like something’s missing.
The Embodied Leader and Lover is not a compromise between the two. He is the integration of both. And that integration is what these nine articles have been pointing toward.
Society has taught men that leadership is external, focusing on results, authority, vision, execution. And that love is internal… feeling, vulnerability, connection, surrender. These have been presented as opposites. A man chooses one or the other.
The cost of that separation shows up everywhere:
In business he’s decisive, but disconnected from the people he leads.
In the bedroom he’s present in body, but absent in feeling.
In fatherhood he provides, but isn’t emotionally available.
In his relationship he leads, but doesn’t love or loves, but doesn’t lead.
Neither produces the depth his partner or his children are actually asking for.
The nervous system doesn’t separate these things. Presence is presence. A man who is regulated, embodied, and genuinely feeling himself will naturally lead with clarity and love with depth. He’s built the capacity within himself because he’s met himself at depth, where he is self-aware enough to not be triggered or reactive to life.
You cannot be a great lover without being present. You cannot be a great leader without being present. Presence is the root of both.
And it comes down to trust. Your partner will not trust you if she can’t feel you. The people you are leading will not trust you if they don’t see you fully present and honest about where you are in each moment. That’s especially true with emotions. E-motions are energy in motion that are meant to be felt and allowed to move freely. When they are repressed and stored in the body, that will only create more separation (remember the armour). I am speaking to authenticity vs stoicism here.
Where the Embodied Leader and Lover really came together for me was in Systema. Because in Systema, we view any opponent or aggressor as someone who is holding excess amounts of tension and requires healing.
We don’t hit to hurt. We hit to heal.
There is always compassion behind the application.
And when you’ve been practicing Systema long enough, and you’ve really embodied the breathing principles and freed yourself of tension, you tend to become an incredible healer. This was my own experience. Because Systema and the peeling back of armour gave me greater capacity and sensitivity to feel others. My ability to feel the tension in others allowed me to help liberate it.
But before that integration, I lived the shadow of both sides.
As a competitive martial artist coming from a military culture, I was very much the shadow warrior. The masochistic warrior. Pure leadership without love. Very aggressive. Very hard. Compromising myself to not feel.
The armour served me. Until it didn’t.
Then as I moved into my healing journey and stopped watching porn and began using sexual energy for my own healing and awakening. I moved into being more of a sexual healer in my relationships. Loving, but without full grounded leadership. Not really committed. Just enjoying the connection and the lovemaking.
And that arc eventually led me to become the integrated man I am now with Sasha.
What does it look like now? It’s continuously coming back to my heart. Literally feeling my heart beating in my chest many moments throughout the day. Breathing into that space. Remembering that’s where I want to lead from, not from my head.
I have zero tolerance for drama because it’s just a waste of energy. I will validate the person, but I’m not here to perpetuate or enable someone’s limitations. I won’t allow another to pull me into their limitation either. I will lovingly hold them in the highest regard and see them in their highest light.
Sasha has been a great teacher for me in how to be a mature, responsible man in a way that was never demonstrated to me by my dad or my stepdad. She’s been really good about teaching me what she wants… what helps her feel safe and held and loved. And that hasn’t always come easy because it wasn’t modelled to me. It wasn’t something I witnessed from my parents. It has been very challenging at times, but I’ve been committed to being that man for my beloved. Being the embodied leader and lover for my partner.
And bless my beloved wife for asking for what she wants.
How Sasha reflects this integration back to me is she often brags about our lovemaking and my group facilitation. And I love that. I love that she shares how deeply satisfied and proud she is. And I think that says everything. I’ve embodied the leader and lover at a very high level and at the same time I’m very humble about it. Because the truth is, it’s rare.
People don’t necessarily understand the embodied man… the embodied leader and lover… because society has sold one or the other. It can be a little off-putting to meet a man who is genuinely both. Ultimately what people notice is the integrity. There’s a strong integrity. And that integrity is felt energetically. It will often trigger other people, bring up things in them that have been dormant or repressed, parts of themselves that weren’t fully acknowledged.
What does it actually mean to be an Embodied Leader and Lover?
True leadership is not power over. It is presence. The most powerful leader in any room is the most regulated, most grounded, most integrated man in that space. Not the loudest. Not the most successful. The most present. Because he has done enough work, met himself at such depth, that he is able to be calm even in uncertainty.
True love is not softness. It is the courage to fully feel and stay present. To meet another person in their depth without contracting or ejecting. To hold the tension of full intimacy without performing or disappearing.
A man who hasn’t allowed himself to feel and receive love… the moment his partner provides ‘too much’ love will either feel unworthy or unsafe. Because he hasn’t built the nervous system capacity for love.
It always comes back to the nervous system capacity.
When a man has not developed it, he will contract when navigating the edge of his comfort zone. He will fight, flee, fix, fawn, or freeze. These are all nervous system responses because deep down he doesn’t feel safe. Because he hasn’t swum in those deep waters.
The Embodied Leader and Lover doesn’t choose between strength and sensitivity. He has done enough inner work that both are available to him simultaneously. He can be fierce and tender in the same moment. He can hold the vision and the feeling at the same time.
This is what the four archetypes look like when they are all mature and integrated. The Warrior’s discipline. The Lover’s sensitivity. The Magician’s wisdom. The King’s vision. All working together in one man, in one body, in one breath.
This is what sacred union looks like.
Remember… it’s all an inside job.
When a man is fully embodied as leader and lover, his partner naturally moves into her deepest feminine. The polarity becomes clean, alive, self-sustaining, even regenerative. The relationship becomes the spiritual path rather than an obstacle to it.
If you’ve been leading without loving or loving without leading… some part of you has always known something was missing.
In the next transmission… the final one in this series… I’m going to speak directly to that knowing. To what it’s actually costing you to remain a partial man. And to the choice that is available to you right now.
In the meantime, there is somewhere to go with what this article has opened in you.
